Bargain Bites
This project investigated how we can incentivize in-store shopping and in what ways we can establish an effective and easy shopping experience. Our goal was to understand the needs of the contemporary grocery shopper and design a refined experience for a grocery store that maximizes meaningful, positive, and empowering interactions in the physical store environment.
Duration: 4 Weeks
Role: UI/UX
(team of 5)
Tools: Figma, Miro, Canva
Deliverables: Mockups and Video Pitch
What is the
backstory?
Shopping for groceries is a universal part of our lifestyle, with many families shopping multiple times a week for food and other convenience items. However, through the pandemic online shopping has skyrocketed and many grocery stores now offer shopping and delivery services, making shopping possible without ever setting foot in the store. What new experiences could the physical grocery store support that engage and delight the consumer?
We came up with a bunch of potential ideas that could take the idea of a basic grocery store and turn it into an interactive and embodied shopping experience.

Secondary Research
We conducted extensive research about in-store and online shopping elements to help broaden our understanding of these two shopping methods that would accurately guide our group’s thinking toward our design idea. In this research, we investigated young adults, store incentives, grocery stores, shopping psychology, product placement, and sales/discounts to explore: How can we increase the productivity and traffic in the stores while also providing an added incentive over online shopping to young adults who do not know how to cook? Our secondary research has been conducted around:
-
Motivating young adults to go to a grocery store
-
Understanding how young adults feel about cooking
-
Understand how we can reduce the consumption of junk food and encourage a healthier lifestyle.
-
Understand how discounts and the medium of shopping are interconnected.
Interviews
Goals we wanted to accomplish:
To introduce our research through interviews, trying to identify problems young adults might face when shopping and gain critical insights to find a way in-store shopping can be a solution to these issues.

We listed our group's findings and narrowed it down to the main problems that users have faced. We then categorized our findings into subcategories so it's easier to find our data and reference it.
Journey Mapping and Scenarios
Goals we wanted to accomplish:
To create a User journey map detailing all of the thoughts and emotions a user might go through when using Bargain Bites and the narrative behind it
The journey map depicts the five E’s: entice, enter, engage, exit, and extend. From this, you can identify the varying emotions that the user experiences. The detailed scenario is listed to the right.
Our Final Mockups
Project Reflection
While working on project 2 I learned a lot about different user groups under one problem. Finding a solution was difficult because of that due to the confusion our group had on people we wanted to target and solutions we wanted to work on. While discussing a couple of ideas we had cooking workshops, scavenger hunts, and our solution, Bargain bites. Our goal of the project was to create something that will help people make healthier life choices whether that be through discount incentives or guide them to a healthier lifestyle; we did both. We also learned how to use and make user journey maps, which has been the most challenging concept I have learned because of the number of steps to fully analyze and use. We also added mockups in this project that I did not make last project so working with that software was also another experience. Compared to the last project I felt like we didn’t work on that many sketches and storyboards but I think it was due to the little amount of time we had compared to last time. Overall, I enjoyed the process of this project but I hope that we’re able to be more creative with the next project and learn even more about the process of UX design.
